Table Tops

Materials

Our copper tops are made of recycled copper which is melted in a wood fire , rolled into a sheet , and hammered by hand every square inch. Hammering the copper causes it to be stressed and brittle , so the next process is to return the copper sheet back to the fire so it can be annealed , or softened. This procedure requires the copper to be heated and quickly cooled. This process is repeated depending on the amount of hammering required. The black and mottled discoloration on the copper is caused by the carbon in the fire and will be different with each piece. When the copper skin is completed, it is hammered around and attached to a wooden core.

Since, our copper tops are built one at a time by hand we have the ability to do custom size. We are capable of building copper tops up to 108 inches long and as wide as 48 inches.

Our Zinc is recycled from natural sources, melted, and rolled into sheets by hand. We then hand hammer the sheet to create the surface texture by which you may know our copper. Indeed, the processes are similar. The Zinc sheet is then applied to a wood core using small brads. You will notice that any Zinc top over 39 inches will have a row of nail brads holding multiple pieces. This is because Zinc is very difficult and dangerous to weld, as different from our copper tops. Zinc is more fragile than copper and requires great skill to apply smoothly. When construction is complete, we use a special formula of agents to create the variation of color that gives the distinct contrast of color. Our finished Zinc table tops are then waxed three times by hand, and buffed to a muted shine.

Keep waxing your Zinc to build up layers for protection. It can be scratched easily and wax is the best defense to keep it looking new. We recommend Mother's Carnauba Cleaning Wax, or any other wax containing natural Carnauba, as it dries to a hard shine for maximum protection.
